Spain will not award a national bullfighting prize in 2024. According to El Pais, the country’s Ministry of Culture has already begun the procedure for the final cancellation of the show.
The head of the Ministry of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, reminded that bullfighting is primarily a show based on animal cruelty.
“The national awards are intended to draw attention to cultural sectors that have a lot of social support, and we believe that in these times there is a growing concern for animal welfare in society,” the ministry explains.
The number of shows has decreased in recent years:
- In 2007, there were 3,651 of them
- in 2022, only 1,546.
