The ban on taxi driving for Ukrainians may lead to a sharp rise in taxi prices in Poland

Starting from June 17, 2024, every driver engaged in the transportation of people in Poland will be required to have a Polish driver’s license. This will reduce the supply of taxi services, as many foreigners, including Ukrainians, work there.

Starting June 17, every driver engaged in the transportation of people in Poland will have to have a Polish driver’s license. According to the TOR Economic Advisory Team, as a result, prices for transportation services through aggregators such as Uber or Bolt could rise by up to 50%, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna writes.

Not all foreigners can obtain a Polish driving license – there are certain requirements. In particular, you need to stay in this country for at least 185 days.

Michal Konowrocki, managing director of passenger transportation at Uber CEE, said that the risk of churn is between 15 and 30 percent. The consequences of this situation will be felt by passengers.

According to the TOR Economic Advisory Team, the number of taxi drivers across the country could decrease by 10 percent, and in Warsaw by 30 percent. This will cause transportation prices in Polish cities to double.

The rules, which will come into effect on June 17, were introduced by last year’s amendments to the Law on Road Traffic and some other acts. The justification states that the project was the result of “government action in response to media reports of abuses, including harassment, by road transport drivers and the need to eliminate these abuses.”
